Parker Fellowship 2009-2010

This Fellowship has been founded because of the testimony of Christ's work through Monroe Parker. May the Lord grant grace that we might all leave a spiritual legacy worth remembering.

Meet the Members of the Parker Fellowship:

Ron Visser

Why am I at Baptist College of Ministry Theological Seminary (BCMTS)?

Since the age of 14, I have known without a doubt God’s calling on my life to preach. This understanding gave me a tremendous sense of purpose through my teen years. After I graduated from high school, God opened doors for me to pursue my bachelor degree in Theology through a church-based college in South Carolina, to travel around the world on extended mission trips, and most recently to complete a three-year internship in biblical counseling.

Though grateful for the experience God had opened for me, I came to recognize the need to pursue additional training to better prepare for local church ministry. I wanted more than just academics, however. I wanted the opportunity to learn ministry in the practical context of the local church. Disappointed by the general compromise pervasive in even our conservative churches and colleges, I also desired an educational atmosphere that would serve to underscore those moral convictions God had graciously brought me to through great brokenness in my later teen years, and would provide a biblical foundation for dynamic, Spirit-empowered ministry.

How was I introduced to Baptist College of Ministry?

When I was personally introduced to Baptist College of Ministry through the Holiness Conference in 2002, I immediately desired to attend. However, God did not open the door for this until the Spring of 2009. In my short time in Seminary here at BCM, I am even more convinced that this is the right place. I praise God for the way He is using the preaching, the studies, and the ministry opportunities to further develop brokenness and character in my life.

Because of Christ,
Ron Visser

Why am I at Baptist College of Ministry Theological Seminary (BCMTS)?

The Lord led me to become a student at BCM three years ago. My sister Laura attended college here, and graduated in 2007. I was familiar with the school and the Holiness Conferences. When the Lord called me to preach in the fall of 2006, after spending a few years in the engineering field, I knew that BCM was probably the best school in America for young people training for ministry. I appreciated the dual emphasis on practical holiness and sanctification by faith. Since coming here, I have also begun to appreciate in an even greater way the emphasis on local church ministry. The Lord worked in my heart last year as Matthew Weber and I spent much time praying for our bus route that the edification ministry within the body of Christ is really the answer for spiritual growth and conformance to the life of Christ. Without being vitally connected to the organism of the local church (and one that is living in corporate revival), no one can grow to be completely what Christ desires them to be. I can lead any number of people to the Lord (though really He is the one doing it, ultimately), but if they do not become a vital part of a local church family, they will not go on to glorify God and be "to the praise of His glory," as Paul writes in Ephesians 1.

What is my personal burden?

I have been also stirred recently about the need to personally pursue spiritual growth at BCM. Ultimately, our Christian maturity is not accomplished by Pastor VanGelderen, or by the ministry here at BCM. It is accomplished by the Triune God Himself. Praise the Lord that He uses the staff and faculty at BCM in accomplishing this, but an educational program or method is not enough to bring me to where God wants me to be by the time I graduate. Spiritual maturity (especially as compared to the great men of faith in the past) is not an automatic result of attending BCM. I must be personally, diligently, whole-heartedly pursuing Spiritual growth and maturity, so that God can bring me to where He wants me to be in the next few years, not just to where I can measure up to the approval of those in leadership. I do thank the Lord for the high standard of spirituality that we are held to here, but the reality is that if the standard were the life of the apostle Paul, most of us wouldn't be students here anymore. Our lives are short. We only have a few years in school. We only have one chance to receive a ministry education (with the exeption of further mentoring by older men in our future ministry). My burden for my time here is that I will not fall short of all that God wants to do in my life during this time.
